Tonya Y. Parker is the Director of the Department of Community Affairs & Innovative Programs for Rockdale County. She has held the position for more than 3 and a half years, with a total of 23 years of experience in the media and PR industry. In short, she and her staff oversee the County’s communications and branding efforts, major event planning, crisis communications, its website, media relations, all social media pages, and government access channel, Rockdale 23. Also, her duties include handling the SPLOST Communications Subcommittee, Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful and the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowner & Civic Associations.
Before joining Rockdale County, Mrs. Parker was Director of Community Relations & Public Affairs for Further Development, a private firm based in Portland, OR. Before then, she served as Fannie Mae’s Senior Deputy Director of its Oregon Community Business Center, where she partnered with lenders, builders, realtors, nonprofit developers, governments, and civic leaders on major community improvement projects. Mrs. Parker also has served as Director of the Bureau of Housing & Community Development for the City of Portland, managing a budget of more than $25 million of HUD and public funds to implement a variety of community enhancement programs and projects.
Mrs. Parker began the first half of her career as an award-winning newspaper reporter in the Pacific NW covering everything from education to crime and courts.
She has an MBA cum laude from George Fox University and Bachelors of Arts degree with honors in journalism from the University of Oregon. She also is a member of PRSA GA, a graduate of the national Executive Leadership Institute through NFBPA and a member of the 2016 Leadership Rockdale class.
